The Hawks have confirmed that an estimated US$15-million (R24 million) in cash has been stolen in a cash heist at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport.
It’s understood the heist occurred late last night when “police” stopped GuardForce personnel as they were transporting the money to an awaiting flight bound for London.
It’s being reported that the robbers were driving a marked ‘police’ van with flashing lights which ordered the vehicle transporting the cash to stop as it neared the aircraft.
News24 is reporting that the airline affected is South African Airways (SAA)
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says a high level investigation is underway.
“We can confirm the robbery at OR Tambo. We are not in a position to give further details of what transpired pending the investigation.”
It’s also unclear at this stage if anyone was hurt during the incident.
