Mermaid Murder, a Hoax

April 01, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-04-01

Relatives of a 15-year-old boy who drowned in a dam in Marikana in Soshanguve  have denied that he was killed by a mermaid like creature.

The Pretoria North Rekord reports Mpho Shongwe was reportedly grabbed and pulled into the water by a mermaid at the dam this week.

The police’s Petunia Chabangu says three boys between the ages of 11 and 15 were given R1 each and told to come back the next day by a woman at the dam.

“When they were busy talking to the woman, one of the kids saw that the woman was actually a fish from the waist down. He alerted the other kids but as they tried to run away, the mamlambo (mermaid) grabbed Shongwe and pulled him into the dam.”

An elder from the family told Rekord today they were not ready to speak to the media but expressed surprise at the rumours of a mermaid.

“The boy drowned. Where do people get reports about the mermaid? Give us time to mourn. Please respect that and leave.”

Chabangu says the information gathered by police from witnesses might have been exaggerated.

The Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) Ame Van Heerden says it has received no reports about death of a boy by a mermaid.

“No one has reported anything like this to the SPCA. We don’t believe such a creatures exist.”
