Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has warned the Passenger Rail Agency South Africa’s (PRASA) management that heads will roll if they do get their act together so sort out issues at train stations.
Mbalula visited a number of dilapidated and vandalised train stations across Johannesburg on Monday morning.
A number of train stations in Johannesburg including Lenasia and Lawley have been vandalised during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Currently no trains are running in the country with many commuters using minibus taxis.
Mbalula says that while vandalism predates the pandemic, it has been exacerbated during lockdown.
“It grew exponentially in a bigger, bigger way during the pandemic particularly the shutdown. As you can see we are at Mayfair, this station was operational, cables were being stolen, but it has been brought down, totally to the ground. It means there was no security and all of that. The place itself was badly run.”
Mbalula says PRASA Management will provide further details of the recovery plan as announced during the department 2021 budget vote.
