Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has revealed that the matric class of 2020 has achieved a pass rate of 76.2%.

This is a decrease from the 81.3% pass rate achieved in 2019.

Motshekga made the announcement of the results on Monday after quality assurance body Umalusi last week gave the department the green light to release the results.

Motshekga says the passes of 2020 were of great quality adding that if it was not for the COVID-19 pandemic, this class could have produced the best results ever.

“The overall pass rate including the progressed learners is at 76.2% a drop of 5.1%. I am grateful to all of South Africa. I was expecting a bloodbath. I am grateful to all teachers we tried all in our powers to claw back time but we can’t.”

The Provincial Matric performance is as follows:

  • Free state 85.1%
  • Gauteng 83.3%
  • Western Cape 79.9%
  • KwaZulu Natal 77.6%
  • North West 76.2
  • Mpumalanga 73.7%
  • Limpopo 68.2
  • Eastern Cape 68.1%
  • Northern Cape 66%

Motshekga says 65,000 progressed learners sat for the exams, 24,000 passed the national senior certificate exams, and over 3,000 got bachelor passes with over 1,600 distinctions
