Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he has written to Human Settlements MEC to Lebogang Maile telling him to achieve a joint approach to addressing the illegal land grabs in Lenasia South.
On Friday residents blocked roads leading into Lenasia South as they protested against the illegal occupation of land in the area.
Unrest followed on Saturday when police fired rubber bullets to break up a standoff between homeowners and shack dwellers near the K43 on Narans Farm.
Mashaba says there are two competing and highly complex challenges, which is facing government at all levels.
“In my letter, I stressed to MEC Maile the need to ensure that we plan and coordinate together, between the City and the Gauteng Provincial Government, to avoid the trends in the past. In previous instances of unrest, engagements were held with communities without solid plans, budgets and deliverables to which government could be held to account.”
Mashaba says a game of political finger pointing will not benefit the residents in these affected areas and there is a need to identify those orchestrating and profiteering from the illegal land occupations.
