Many Ways of Doing Good

April 11, 2023

Abu Hurairah RA reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Every day the sun rises charity (Sadaqah) is due on every joint of a person: you administer justice between two men is a charity; and assisting a man to mount his beast, or helping him load his luggage on it is a charity; and a good word is a charity; and every step that you take (towards the mosque) for Salaah (prayer) is a charity and removing harmful things from the road is a charity”. [Bukhari and Muslim].

In Muslim, it is reported on the authority of Aishah RA that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Every one of the children of Adam has been created with three hundred and sixty joints; so he who declares the Glory of Allah, praises Allah, declares Allah to be One, glorifies Allah, and seeks forgiveness from Allah, and removes stone, or thorn, or bone from people’s path, and enjoins good and forbids evil, to the number of those three hundred and sixty, will walk that day having rescued himself from Hell”.

In this Hadith, we are told to be grateful on a daily basis for the health of our joints and bodies. Gratitude may be expressed by engaging in any of the numerous forms of good deeds, however it should be remembered that sincerity is a precondition for the acceptance of every good deed.

One who arbitrates or reconciles justly between people in order to bring about peace, receives the reward of charity. In fact, reconciling between disputing groups is such a noble action that speaking a lie becomes permissible for this purpose.

EASY GOOD DEED – Janaza Salaah

Participation in the burial service of a Muslim and accompaniment of the funeral procession up to the grave have been designated as acts of great merit in the Ahaadith, in fact our most exalted Prophet ﷺ has called it a right of the dead that the living ones should pray for them and accompany them to the graveyard.

Although participation in burial service and burial are Fardh-e-Kifayah, i.e. if a few do these, it does not remain compulsory for others, yet both are acts of great merit.

Islam has placed emphasis on a Muslim participating in the last rites of his fellow Muslim. To encourage this virtue, tremendous reward is recorded for one who fulfils this responsibility. Bear in mind, this duty is not only the responsibility of burial societies. Muslims in general should participate, especially when there are few people available.

Nabi ﷺ said, “One who gives ghusl to (bathes) a deceased and conceals his defects, will be forgiven forty times. Whoever shrouds a deceased person, Allah will clothe him with the fine silk of Jannah…” [Mustadrak Hakim]

Those involved in the bathing of the deceased should not disclose any defect of the deceased. The person who conceals the defects of his fellow Muslim, Allah will conceal his defects on the day of Qiyamah.

Abu Huraira RA reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Allah’s Messenger, what are these? Thereupon he said: When you meet him, offer him greetings; when he invites you to a feast accept it. when he seeks your council give him, and when he sneezes and says:” All praise is due to Allah,” you say Yarhamuk Allah (May Allah show mercy to you); and when he fails ill visit him; and when he dies follow his bier.

Another responsibility of the community is to bury the deceased with dignity and respect. Great rewards are recorded for the one who accompanies the Janazah to the graveyard and participates in the burial.

Abu Hurairah RA reports that Nabi ﷺ said, “One who accompanies the Janazah of a Muslim with faith and hope of earning reward, and remains with it until the burial is complete, shall return (home) with two qirat (great) rewards. Each reward is equal to Mount Uhud, and the person who performs the Janazah Salah only, and returns before the burial, will return with one qirat (great) reward.” (Bukhari)

Commentators explain that a ‘qirat’ is equivalent to the reward of Mount Uhud, a huge mountain in Madinah Munawwarah.
