Many Ways of Doing Good

April 14, 2023

Abu Musa AlAshari RA reported Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying, ‘Whoever prays the two cool prayers will go to Paradise.’ [Bukhari and Muslim]

The ‘cold’ Ṣalaahs refer to the Fajr and Aṣr Ṣalaahs. They are referred to as such because it is relatively cooler during these times of the day compared to other times.

At the time of Fajr Salaah people are enjoying their sleep while at the time of Aṣr Salaah they are concluding their business activities for the day, hence to perform these Ṣalaahs punctually is a sign of sincerity and displays love for worship.

The Hadith does not mean that Paradise is guaranteed for one who performs only these two Ṣalaahs, rather it points to the fact that one who performs these two Ṣalaahs will observe the remaining three Ṣalaahs more regularly and punctually.

Some scholars are of the view that the two ‘cold’ Ṣalaahs refer to Fajr and Isha. At the time of Isha, the weather is also cool, in fact cooler than the time of Asr. The time of Isha is also a difficult time because at night people are generally tired from the day’s toils.

EASY GOOD DEED – Rights of Neighbours

Neighbour’s rights are many and are ordained by Allah.

Serve Allah and do not commit shirk (associate any partner) with Him, and be good to your parents, kinfolks, orphans, the helpless, near and far neighbours who keep company with you, the travellers in need, and the slaves you own. Allah does not love those who are arrogant and boastful, [Nisaa 4: 36]

Our holy Prophet ﷺ has said:

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah RA that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Jibra’il kept enjoining good treatment of neighbours until I thought he would make neighbours heirs.” [Ibn Majah]

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-As RA reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The best of companions in the sight of Allah Almighty is the best of them towards his companion, and the best of neighbours in the sight of Allah is the best of them towards his neighbour.” [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]

Abu Dharr RA reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Abu Dharr! If you cook some stew, make a lot of it and fulfil your duty to your neighbours (or divide it among your neighbours).” [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]

The Prophet ﷺ is also reported to have said:

He who believes in Allah and the last day should not annoy his neighbour, [Bukhari and Muslim]

The first and foremost and the principal right of the neighbour is not to cause him pain, trouble or sorrow;

‏The Prophet ﷺ said, “By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.” It was asked, “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil”. [Bukhari and Muslim].

Another narration of Muslim is: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He will not enter Jannah whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct”.

Moreover, helping him in his need, sending him occasional gifts, sharing his joys and sorrows are all meritorious and rewarding acts. In fact if one’s neighbour is poor or in financial straits he should be helped monetarily too.

‘How many a neighbour will be brought together with his neighbour on the Day of Rising! He will say, “Lord, this man closed his door to me and refused to show me common kindness!”‘” [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]

Neighbour is not necessarily one’s equal in social or material sense; poor neighbours are also neighbours and they have all the more rights as they are in greater need of help and assistance, If a neighbour is hungry, it is not merely meritorious to feed him but rather a duty. Even an unbeliever neighbour should be treated well.

Mujahid R reported that a sheep was slaughtered for ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr RA. He asked his slave, “Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Jibril kept on recommending that I treat my neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs.'” [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad]
