Outgoing Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) says the issue of state capture continues to divide the party.
Mantashe was briefing the media on Monday, in what could possibly be his last address as secretary-general after 10 years at Luthuli House.
On Sunday ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini said South Africans must practice forgiveness when it comes to state capture, in the same way they forgave apartheid.
Mantashe says the debate around state capture is an issue which is plaguing the ANC.
He says state capture will be discussed during the conference.
“It divides us but it imposes a responsibility on the leadership of the ANC to engage that debate find a common garden and a resolute response to it. The ANC does not expect to be flat footed on the matter and that is the responsibility facing the new leadership of the ANC.”
Mantashe advised his successor to engage with journalists and not fight with them.
“I made a new commitment that once the new secretary general is elected, I will bring him here and introduce him to you. Because if I don’t do that it will be like missing on duties.”
Mantashe says the new secretary-general must be accessible, otherwise the ANC will suffer.
