As the world marks the 10th Anniversary of Mandela Day, Al Aqsa and Lenasia Muslim School students are spending their 67 minutes beautifying the Lenasia Avalon qabrastan.

Mandela Day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, four years before South Africa’s first democratically elected president died at the age of 95.

In recent years, the Avalon qabrastan and some of the graves of those who passed away have become neglected.

Visitors to the qabrastan have complained of long grass, graves sinking in, flooded roads and potholes.

Speaking to Radio Islam, community activist Farouk Mosam says the qabrastan needs to be maintained on a regular basis.

“The aim of the initiative is to come here to the qabrastan, cleanup and go and make dua for the deceased people that have passed away and keep the qabars neat as well.”

Every year on his birthday, people from across the globe aim to highlight Mandela’s 67 years of selfless dedication to fighting for peace, reconciliation and democracy by doing good for others
