Gauteng Premier David Makhura has appointed Nomathemba Mokgethi as the new Gauteng Health MEC.

Makhura reshuffled his cabinet on Wednesday making a number of changes including appointing former mayor Parks Tau as the new Gauteng MEC for economic development.

The former health MEC for Gauteng Bandile Masuku was fired in October over the personal protective equipment (PPE) tender scandal.

Makhura also announced the appointment of an intervention support team in the health department

He says the appointment of Mokgethi strengthens the provinces health response.

“The MEC for health in Gauteng province is will be Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi. She is the MEC for social development at the moment. I would like to say to the people of our province, she has got twenty-seven years experience of working in both the local government and health sector. Her training is in healthcare, she was a nurse in one of our local districts in the West Rand.”

On the appointment of Tau as MEC for economic development, Makhura says the portfolio is critical in driving Gauteng’s plan to grow the economy and create jobs in the province.

Makhura says Tau has a wealth of experience accumulated over many years as both MMC and Mayor in the city of Joburg.
