A community activist and the great grandson Mahatma Gandhi has told Radio Islam that following the advent of democracy in South Africa we should stop looking at people in terms of the race tag but rather as human beings.
Satish Dhupelia was responding to comments made by EFF leaders Julius Malema against members of Indian communities, accusing them of exploiting African people.
Addressing thousands of his supporters at the Chatsworth Stadium, south of Durban, during an EFF election rally on Sunday, Malema said black people who work as domestic workers or gardeners are paid nothing by their fellow South Africans who happen to be of Indian descent.
Dhupelia says as the great grandson grandson Mahatma Gandhi, he is saddened by Malema’s comments.
“It seems that some of our leaders are stuck in the rut of looking at people from a racial tag and then making blanket statements which actually affect the entire community when he might be talking about one or two people that are doing something wrong. This is not the first time he made utterances against the Indian community.”
Dhupelia says Malema should be building bridges not burning them.
“As a politician and as one who’s as aspiring to be a leader in this country, he should be learning to build bridges among the different races in this country so we all regard ourselves as brothers and as one human race, one group of South Africans and I don’t see him doing that and to that to me is a real worry.”
Dhupelia says politicians should represent everybody in the country and not just one race group.
