The Legal Resources (LRC) Centre is taking government to court for allegedly failing to assist the family of a South African man detained in an Egyptian prison.
Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni was detained by Egypt’s National Security at Cairo Airport in early December after flying to Egypt for his daughter’s engagement.
Bassiouni is accused of being part of the banned Muslim Brotherhood and remains at the notorious Tora Prison, where numerous high-profile prisoners have been detained.
Regional Director for The Legal Resources Centre Naseema Fakir says they have not received a substantive response from government after sending letters of demand to find out if governments done all it can to secure Sheikh Bassiouni’s release.
Fakir says the LRC is now drafting court papers to compel the South African government to assist.
“We basically taking government departments to court in order to get information regarding the charges against Dr. Bassiouni. To get him access to medical treatment and consular access.”
The Intentional relations department’s Clayson Monyela maintains that while the LRC has the right to take legal action against the department, its doing everything possible to assist the family.
