London musjid accepting Zakaat in Bitcoin

May 30, 2018

Thahir Asmal, Radio Islam News – 30-05-2018

A British musjid has become the first Islamic organisation to accept cryptocurrency for Zakaat.

The Dalston Mosque in London’s North East has confirmed it will welcome Bitcoin and Ethereum payments, which will be used to undertake repairs.

Chairman of the facility, Erkin Guney, says they are hoping to raise around £10,000 (R167,200) in the currency during Ramadan to help fund the project.

“We are hoping to bring the attention to the Muslim world we need support. I’ve grown up around here and I have watched the community grow and the challenges it’s faced with. It’s a struggle, with housing, food, the cost of funerals and government changes.

Guney says they are appealing to a wider audience with new money and have set up a platform for wealthier Muslims outside their community to support and donate to the mosque.
