Former Secretary Liz Truss has been named as the leader of the Conservative party therefore, making her the next prime minister after Boris Johnson was forced to resign in July after continues scandals.

This comes following weeks of an intense battle for leadership between Truss and former finance minister, Rishi Sunak.

After Monday’s announcement, Truss will travel along with Johnson to meet Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Palace on Tuesday where Johnson will handover his official resignation to the Queen. Thereafter, Truss will host an audience with the Queen asking to form a government.

In a short acceptance speech following the declaration, Truss thanked Johnson for his leadership as she takes the stand.

“I also want to thank our outgoing leader, my friend, Boris Johnson. Boris, you got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine, and you stood up to Vladimir Putin. You are admired from [Kyiv] to Carlisle.”

While she promises to tackle Britain’s high cost of living, adding that she will come up with a solution in a week to the rising electricity bills and increased fuel prices as winter looms around the corner.

Even though she declined to comment on a report that her energy plan could exceed 100 billion British pounds ($115bn), Truss during her leadership campaign indicated that she would challenge convention by scrapping tax increases and cutting other levies that some economists say would increase inflation.

“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. And I will deliver on the National Health Service,” she said.

Meanwhile Johnson states that he would give Truss his ‘most fervent support’.
