Zinniaville residents in Rustenburg are outraged after not having electricity for more than a week.
Unrest spilled onto the streets of Zinniaville two weeks ago resulting in electrical boxes being destroyed and homes being damaged.
It’s alleged protests started when the local municipality swooped on illegal electricity connections in the informal settlement on the outskirts of town.
Speaking to Radio Islam, resident Ml Adil Kholvadia says while the things have simmered down, the effects of the protests have left residents without power.
Ml Kholvadia says the local municipality has not indicated when electricity will be restored to the area.
“At present, we are still sitting without electricity here. We were made to understand that the contractors were on site and they will be starting work. When they starting work, that we’ve got no idea.”
Ml Kholvadia say residents have had to rely on other means to carry on with their daily lives.
“Many of the residents unfortunately had to dig very deep into their pockets to go and get generators. We are all running on generators at the present moment. Honestly speaking at my residence with the kids, no hot water, we are using gas to warm water to bath and take showers.”
Radio Islam has contacted the Rustenburg Municipality and is awaiting for an official comment on the status of the restoration of electricity to the area.
