After more than five years, the Witbank Jumuah Masjid in eMalahleni will finally open its doors on Friday for the Muslim community to perform salaah.

Despite all protocols being adhered to, the Witbank Jumu’ah Masjid project was initially opposed for various reasons.

In December 2012, the Pretoria High Court declared the sale of a portion of land, previously a park, by the local municipality to the Witbank Muslim Jamaat, invalid.

The Propark Association – a group who campaigned for the park to remain – took this decision on review to the High Court.

They argued that while they were not against a masjid they wanted the park to be preserved.

Speaking to Radio Islam, secretary of the Witbank Muslim Jamat Farouk Arbee says after a long battle, the Muslim community have a masjid that can serve the community.

Arbee has invited Muslim communities to the opening of the masjid.

“Please share these days of joy with us. These are Mubarak days. We’ve reached this stage after several years of sweat and blood and tears. Please come and share it with us. This is a personal invitation Insha’Allah.”

The opening is expected to be graced by esteemed Islamic scholars including Mufti Raza-ul-Haq, Ml Fazlur-Rahman, Ml Dawood Sampson and Ml Sulaimaan Ravat amongst others.
