Gift of the Givers says the organization decided to withdraw from negotiations for the release of kidnapped South African photographer Shiraz Mohamed because his family started working with Dr Fekri Shabaan.

Shabaan was mentioned in the latest video of Mohamed purportedly showing him pleading for his life.

Mohamed was taken hostage more than two years ago while travelling with the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers on a relief mission to Syria.

Gift of the Givers Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman says Mohamed’s family made a choice to work with Shabaan in negotiating his release from captivity.

“We busy right now with seven hostage situations. We always tell the people you have to follow what we tell you because this is a very dangerous business, but we don’t force you to stay with us. You are most welcome to choose any party that you think is in you interest.”

Sooliman says Mohamed’s family made a video which was circulated on Syrian media without the knowledge of Gift of the Givers.

“I asked them what is this? You using another source, you going to make Shiraz’s life very expensive and then they said okay they made a mistake Then we see another video about two of three weeks later where the mother speaks about this person in the video that he took Shiraz and he’s the right person helping us.”

Sooliman says they informed Mohamed’s family that while they were worried and anxious in getting him home, they were putting his life at risk.
