A Personal lines underwriting manager at Santam says there is a high risk of household appliances being damaged when power is restored after load shedding.
South Africans are again facing the consequences of load shedding as Eskom struggles with new sets of challenges.
On Wednesday, Eskom announced stage two of load shedding which continued until Friday.
Although all is back to normal, there are concerns that South Africans could be in for more rolling blackouts as summer progresses.
Experts are warning that the impact that these power cuts have on especially electronic items are severe.
Santam’s Marius Steyn says South Africans need to mitigate the damages caused by load shedding by being prepared prior to power going off.
“You must know when load shedding is going to take place at your home. And secondly and what a lot of people don’t do is to unplug electrical appliances like televisions or decoders, sound systems or computers which is susceptible to damage during load shedding periods.”
He says load shedding also has an impact on crime.
“If you look at the crime side, the impact of load shedding on crime relates to the security system like the home alarm. And the aim really to ensure that your alarm is always in a hundred percent working condition and not affected by load shedding as well.”
Steyn says load shedding has an immense impact on consumers and businesses alike
