A Lesotho-born, South African wire art solo entrepreneur has made headlines after he built a full scale classic 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 entirely out of wire.
The Mustang nicknamed “Eleanor” has a wire V8 engine, pistons, gearbox, brakes, clutch, working hinges on the doors, seats you can sit in, and even a steering wheel that can turn.
Conty Fonane says he used the internet to research the design of the car before embarking on the mammoth project.
Fonane built his Mustang at the Creative Rides showroom floor in Bryanston working, Monday to Friday, for seven months on the car.
After more than 1120 hours of labour and R180 000 of raw materials later, his 400kg creation was complete.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Fonane says the idea came from watching other boys making wire cars.
“I think most African boys have played with wire cars. So when I grew up I saw the other boys playing with the wire cars. Of course I wasn’t able to shape the wire cars when I was younger. But when I turned about 7 or 8-years-old, than I was able to take the wire and shape my own wire cars.”
Fonane says he also built a full scale McLaren P1 which was showcased at Daytona in Melrose Arch.
