SA government spokesperson Phumla Williams has confirmed that a warrant of arrest has been issued for self-proclaimed prophet Shepard Bushiri and his wife Mary who fled South Africa.

The couple are now fugitives from justice after they secretly fled South Africa last week and returned to their home country of Malawi.

Bushiri and his wife Mary were out on bail of R200-thousand rand and are facing fraud, theft and money laundering charges.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Williams says the couples bail conditions have been revoked.

“The two hundred thousand for each of the Bushiri’s has been revoked and it has been forfeited to the coffers of the state. We are expecting them to be back into the court on 19 November. Should they also fail to make an appearance on the 19th which is the date in which they were expected to, we will forsake their properties.”

It’s believed the couples travel documents were still with the South African Police Service (Saps) when they fled the country.

She says while the Bushiri’s did not flee with Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera who was in South Africa, they are investigating how the couple managed to leave the country without the required documents.

“We have issued a statement to assure South Africans that there is no truth in that allegation. The flight of President of the president of Malawi, President Chakwera left the Waterkloof air space without the Bushiri’s in that plane.”

Williams says Shepard Bushiri is a fugitive in South Africa and he cannot impel demands on the country, adding that the self-proclaimed prophet must be extradited and face the full might of the law.
