The United Ullama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has confirmed that the hilaal for the Islamic month of Muharram and the new Hijri calendar year 1443 has been sighted in various parts of South Africa.
UUCSA’s Ml Ebrahim Bham made the announcement on Monday evening.
Therefore, the 1st of Muharram 1443 corresponds to Tuesday the 10th of August 2021.
Ml Bham says the sighting of the moon ushers in the new month of the Islamic calendar.
“We are all aware that muslims, traditionally, do not celebrate new year as it is commonly understood. However, we do acknowledge the passing of time to reflect on our own mortality and also to remember our ultimate destination and to prepare for that ultimate destination. For verily, the intelligent person is he who prepares for his ultimate destination. That the intelligent person is he who restraints himself and does things that will benefit him in his ultimate destination.”
Ml Bham says Muslims should make dua that Allah (SWT) makes this new year a year of blessedness, peace, prosperity and goodness.
“From the Qur’an we know that it is one of the sacred months and Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) had said, the best of fasts after Ramadan is the fast of Allah’s month in the month of Muharram.’ The entire month of Muharram is sacred, it is blessed and more so the 10th day of Muharram known as Ashura.”
The 10th day of Muharram or Ashura corresponds to the 19th of August.
