The United Nations in South Africa has reached out to the media fraternity in the country to join the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Compact aimed to assist the organization realize its development goals.
The UN held a round table breakfast meeting with various media houses at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on Wednesday.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in 2015 by all 193 United Nations member states set out a roadmap to transform the world.
At the heart of Agenda 2030 are 17 SDG’s and 169 related targets that address the most urgent challenges.
UN Resident Coordinator in South Africa Nardos Bekele-Thomas says they need the media to help them achieve their SDG’s.
“The SDG’s are very ambitious goals and they require two things, determination, commitment, but also it just requires collaboration and partnership, because the media can reach out to millions of people in real time.”
The UN in South Africa says media plays a critical role in supporting public dialogue, enhancing knowledge of ways to support sustainable development and hold governments accountable.
