A Pretoria woman who lost her father-in-law to COVID-19 says she and her family still trying to come to terms with his passing.

A heartbroken Yasmin Maiter Valley was speaking to Radio Islam on Friday about her battle with COVID-19 and dealing with the heartbreak of losing a loved one to the virus.

Yasmin, her husband and her two children were all tested positive for the pandemic before her father-in-law contracted the virus.

Yasmin says losing her 78-year-old father-in-law to COVID-19 was heartbreaking and tragically, she and her family could not even attend his funeral.

“He was an integral part of our family. A pillar of strength, our rock, our patriarch. He was a man of integrity, a man of great value. He placed a lot of emphasis on the Qur’an and learning everything we need to learn for our lives out of the Qur’an.”

Yasmin says people need to understand that COVID-19 is real.

“This virus is non-discriminatory. It attacks and affects whoever, wherever, however it wants to and its very, very real. I think one of the things that I have learned and realized during this time is that people have not yet realized how dangerous it is and how important it is to heed government’s call around the world to be safe, to stop the spread.”

Yasmin says communities need to stand together and have faith that Allah will Insha’Allah lift the pandemic from the world.
