News24 investigative journalist Kyle Cowan says while there are many questions surrounding the death of Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson, there is great efforts being made to piece together what exactly happened to him on that fateful day.
Watson, was killed in a crash in the early hours of Monday morning when the Toyota Corolla he was driving, ploughed into a bridge pillar at OR Tambo Airport near the R21.
While authorities say there was no evidence at this stage suggesting foul play, police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
The car in which Watson died belonged to his embattled business African Global Operations, formerly known as Bosasa.
Speaking to Radio Islam Cowen says while there is speculation why Watson was not driving his BMW, there is a possible reason for this
“The easiest explanation for why he was driving the Corolla is quite simple. His normal day to day car which was a BMW X5 was experiencing some mechanical issues according to a spokesperson for African Global Operations and it was parked at the office and he had taken this work car because obviously he needed some transport and his car wasn’t moving at that stage.”
Speculation is also rife that the crash may have been used to silence Watson, who was due to face tough questions about his company’s dealings at the Sars inquiry on Tuesday.
Watson’s family is reportedly seeking an independent reconstruction of the accident scene.
