[LISTEN] Soothing Guidance & a Message of Hope by Mufti Shafiq Jakhura Following the Recent Deadly Violence & Unrest in South Africa

July 27, 2021

Faizel Patel – 27/07/2021

Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Shafiq Jakhura says people should not be despondent following the recent deadly violence and unrest in the country, urging South Africans to seek the Mercy of Allah.

Mufti Jakhura was responding to a question on the Fiqh Q & A programme on Radio Islam on Monday about the recent unrest and violence in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

At least 337 people died following a week of rolling violence and looting in the two provinces.

The widespread looting and destruction of property have also left a massive dent of around R20 billion in damage in eThekwini alone.

Mufti Jakhura shared a message of soothing guidance and hope to assist South Africans to come to terms with this month’s deadly and costly failed insurrection as mentioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Mufti Jakhura says despondency and despair is “not in the dictionary of a Mu’min or a believer.”

“We don’t become depressed like this and therefore Rasulullah (SAW) in one of the duas of the hadith taught us: ‘Oh Allah grant us so much of Your fear that it will distance us from sin, so much of Your obedience that will make us reach Jannah. Oh Allah grant us that level of imaan, yakeen and certainty in Your being that no musibhat of the dunya can overwhelm us.’”

Mufti Jakhura says South Africans should be hopeful and turn towards Allah.

“We must get up and start moving again. The Urdu poet says: ‘This is how I traversed the past and I went from station and destination after destination. It wasn’t an easy ride, I fell down, but after falling down, I didn’t stay down, I got up and I started walking again, I moved on.’”

Mufti Jakhura says Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Muslims that they should be active in their lives.

“Rasulullah (SAW) teaches us in the hadith that even if a believer knows that tomorrow is Qiaamat, even if you come to know that tomorrow is Qiaamat and you have got a seed in your hand, Nabi (SAW) said: ‘Oh my Ummat, your job is to plant that seed.’”

Mufti Jakhura also shared advice he received from Mufti Zubair Bayat.

“He says ‘look at Muslims and the Muslim minority in this country, we need to integrate, we cannot afford to isolate as an Ummah, and neither should we assimilate with others because we have our own distinct way of life as Muslims and believers, but we need to integrate into society’”

Mufti Jakhura says his ustaadh esteemed Islamic scholar Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani used to say that when our foot is in the path of love and obedience to Allah, how can we ever long to reach the destination and how can we ever long to yield results adding that Muslims should tire themselves with the obedience of the Almighty.
