Immigration and relocation company Global Migration says the South African government should be concerned if citizens who leave country to work abroad do not return back.

Skilled South Africans are leaving the country in droves for reasons which include better career opportunities as well as political and economic stability.

Statistics from the Home Affairs Department indicate that in 2017, eight South African professionals left for every skilled foreigner who entered the country.

The report estimates that over half a million South Africans had emigrated between 1989 and 2003, with the numbers growing by about 9% a year thereafter.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Global Migrations Leon Isaacson says the South African government needs to work very hard to ensure that perceptions about the economy, education and politics amongst other factors change.

“I think if people don’t come back, then clearly we’re not doing something right, because in many other countries what people do to build their careers and their experience and often their companies will send them overseas, is to go overseas and learn new technologies, learn new way of doing things and then comeback and implement those in our country.”

According to the report, the top three areas of expertise of South Africans living abroad were in financial services (21%), IT and Tech (20%) and health care (19%).
