Death penalty or not?

There is again a call for a debate on the reinstatement of the death penalty after a spate of horrific rapes and murders of women and children

In the latest incident, a man suspected of killing his three children and stepdaughter, was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal – All four children were found hanged.

The ACDP, African Covenant, African Transformation Movement and the Inkatha Freedom Party are all currently in favour of bringing back the death penalty

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa say the discussion for the reinstatement for the death penaly should be opened as a harsh deterrent to serious and violent crimes.

“We acknowledge the constitutional right to life for every South African. But for a person who does not respect the right to life for another person what is the point for that person’s right to life to be respected. The monsters do belong to this society.”

Hlabisa says while Justice minister Ronald Lamola has promised to take calls for a referendum for the return of the death sentence to the cabinet, they have charged IFP members of the National Assembly to table the motion to open the discussion on the death sentence.
