The Educators’ Union of South Africa (EUSA) says there is no law that prohibits teachers from bringing guns to school.

Eusa is calling for educators to be allowed to bring guns to school to protect themselves.

This comes after a 48-year old teacher was shot dead at the Masuku Primary School in Folweni, south of Durban on Tuesday.

It’s understood two random people walked onto the school property and gunned down Sboniso Nyawose.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Eusa’s Siphiwe Mpungose says he was also shot by a learner in class in 2012.

He says teachers must be protected.

“Teachers have been silently trying to deal with it, calling the employer to say please provide safety in schools. The employer is turning a deafening ear. So we have decided this has gone too far, we have to take the matter into our own hands.”

Mpungose says while they are calling for teachers to arm themselves, they are not promoting illegality in the country.

“I want to clarify this call that when we say teachers must arm themselves, we are not saying teachers must find illegal weapons. No, teachers must go to a nearby shooting range , register and take a course., then apply for a firearm.”

Mpungose says learners are already bringing illegal guns and knives to school which is creating a hostile and violent atmosphere for teachers.
