Global Economy Director and co-editor of Inequality.org Sarah Anderson says the US is in a state of tremendous uncertainty as officials in the Donald Trump administration continue to disseminate incredibly mixed messages about the president’s COVID-19 condition.
Trump sparked an angry backlash from the medical community on Sunday with a protocol-breaking visit to his supporters outside the hospital where he was being treated for the highly-infectious, potentially deadly new coronavirus.
The backlash continued on Tuesday after the 77-year-old removed his mask when he returned to the White House and for urging Americans not to fear COVID-19 that has killed more than 209,000 people in the country and put him in hospital.
Trump was admitted to hospital on Friday after being diagnosed with the disease.
Anderson says there is tremendous confusion about Trumps condition.
“It’s very distracting. I am finding myself checking the internet every twenty minutes to see if there are additional members of Trumps circle who have tested positive and indeed his press secretary is also now on the list of people in his entourage who’ve tested positive and so the list just keeps growing.”
Anderson says Trumps failure to address and mitigate the spread the COVID-19 crisis head-on in the US has backfired.
“I think that this looks very bad for him. He has throughout the course of this pandemic waffled around, whether it was serious, he continually said it was going to be over quickly. We are not out of the woods whatsoever in this country and most of our fifty states infection rate are only increasing.”
Trump has repeatedly flouted social distancing guidelines meant to curb the spread of the virus’ spread and ignore his own medical advisers.
He also mocked Democrat Joe Biden in last Tuesday’s presidential debate for wearing a mask at events even when he is far from others.
