June 17, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 17-06-2018

The CEO and President of Samsung Electronics Africa says the company is proud to be associated with the Trek4Mandela Expedition which aims to raise funds to ensure that 500,000 girl children will not miss a single day of school.

The Trek4Mandela Expedition led by Sibusisu Vilane will celebrate Madiba’s 100th birthday with two summits of Africa’s highest peak Mount Kilimanjaro with 67 climbers.

Facilitated by the Imbumba Foundation, Trek4Mandela which is in its seventh year brings together individuals from corporate and public backgrounds to assist in raising funds and creating awareness for the Caring 4 Girls programme.

Caring4Girls also aims to create 100 Bursaries to support 100 girls from specific schools and to adopt 100 schools per province to benefit from the project. The goal is to also reach two million girls by the year 2020, providing monthly menstrual support and effective hygiene and health education.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Sung Yoon, CEO and President Samsung Electronics Africa who will be joining the trek says the young women that are positively impacted by Caring 4 Girls are an integral part of South Africa’s future.

“This is not just a normal CSR. We should be truly be part of the South African family and especially for the young girls. Education and helping them to keep school without any absence is very critical.”

Vilane who conquered the summit of the world’s highest mountain Everest twice says the initiative by innovative social entrepreneur and humanitarian Richard Mabaso is to inspire people to help others especially young girls and disadvantaged communities.

“It has come to our attention that there are millions out there that don’t have this facility or resources in their community and we thought we will step up and do something.”

The Trek4Mandela expedition is expected to summit Kilimanjaro on 18 July to Celebrate Mandela Day and again on 9th August to commemorate National Women’s Day.
