Banking Union Sasbo has warned South Africans to brace themselves for a complete standstill of banking, financial services and online banking services as it embarks on a national strike.

Workers affiliated to the union will go on strike in Gauteng, the Free State, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

The union says it is expecting between 45,000 and 50,000 of its members to stay away from work.

Sasbo’s Joe Kokela says they are protesting against the retrenchments in the industry.

Kokela says South African’s should brace for major disruptions of banking services on Friday.

“We are going to make sure that all our members will be out on the street. No one is going to do whatever kind of a job so as to make sure that we have a fruitful protestation so as to make sure our voices have been heard.”

While some banks have informed their customers to use online and cellphone banking, Kokela says even these services will not be operational.

“On Friday we’ll make sure that ATM’s will not be working and further we’ll make sure online banking will also be offline. So  no one will be able to transact.”

Meanwhile SARS says the strike would impact transactions related to tax payments and tax refunds and has encouraged taxpayers to submit their payments within two business days in advance.
