The South African Gun Association (SAGA) says the entire newly revived legislative proposal that will prevent South Africans from getting a firearm licence on the basis that they need the weapon for self-defence is problematic.

SAGA’s Damian Enslin was speaking to Radio Islam about the legislation which will demand a valid reason when applying for a firearm licence and self-defence does not count.

There has been widespread anger over the legislative proposal drawing condemnation from a number of groups who say the prevention of firearms for self-defence affects not only gun owners but also the security industry.

Enslin says the entire bill is problematic and will affect a lot of groups.

“It doesn’t make sense whatsoever to us. Again government seems to go after some privateers, after law-abiding citizens rather than trying to deal with the real problem which is attacking illegal firearms and finding out how illegal firearms is getting into the criminals hands. Soft targets are you and I and the law-abiding citizens.”

Enslin says it is unacceptable that queries about the legislation being emailed to the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service has bounced back because the mailbox Is full.

He says this is unacceptable.

It just seems to be another aspect of government that is not coming to the fore once more. So, we have an engagement with the Civilian Secretariat and another organization and we pointed it out to the Civilian Secretariat and we believe that they are now sort of fixing the problem and that people can once more do their own submissions to the Civilian Secretariat.”

Enslin says police do not seem to have the capacity to administrate the current act correctly.
