Ismail Adam Patel, a member of Friends of Al-Aqsa says veteran journalist Robert Fisk who spent most his life in Beirut, Lebanon was among the people reporting from the people.

Fisk who for decades covered events in the Middle East and elsewhere as a foreign correspondent for the British newspaper The Independent died after suffering a suspected stroke at his Dublin home.

Fisk became unwell on Friday and was admitted to St Vincent’s hospital where he died a short time later.

Speaking to Radio Islam live from the UK, Adam Patel says Fisk’s stories and reporting emanated from interacting with people on the ground.

“Apart from other correspondent who tend to report from the power houses or ministers and governments, Robert Fisk went to the ground and reported how the people were feeling and he reflected those sentiments for the West. I think he was different in that sense and he was echoing what the people felt. That requires a special charisma and intuition as well as going against the mainstream power brokers which is very difficult to do in any career, especially in the Middle East.”

Adam Patel says Fisk was loved by the Muslim community because he was not just reporting on what European or Middle East leaders were thinking but rather the sentiment of peoples which mainstream media tends to ignore.

“This was his hallmark qualities that brought him forward to the Muslim world and they appreciated that was an English person who was trying to be balanced and provided a just reflection of the region.”

Adam Patel says Fisk sacrificed a lot of his for his reporting which why he is today remembered across the globe.
