A French journalist has told Radio Islam the company responsible for the renovation of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is going to be questioned for the disaster.
Flames that began early Monday evening burst rapidly through the roof of the eight-centuries-old cathedral and engulfed the spire, which toppled, quickly followed by the entire roof.
French President Emmanuel Macron said France would launch a campaign to rebuild the cathedral, which is considered to be among the finest examples of French Gothic cathedral architecture.
Since then, pledges to donate millions of euros in cash and materials poured in Tuesday in the aftermath of the fire.
Speaking to Radio Islam from Paris, Nadia Henni Moulai says questions have been raised about how the fire started and who is responsible.
“I know that at least 12 workers may be questioned by the inquiry led by the French police and 14 investigators from the Parisian Criminals Brigade are now focused on this fire.”
Henni Moulai says while the cathedral has suffered extensive damages some artifacts were managed to be saved.
“The roof is totally destroyed. Some artefacts for example the Christ crown which is linked the French King, it has been saved.”
The United Nations’ cultural agency UNESCO has also promised to stand “at France’s side” to restore the site, which it declared a world heritage site in 1991.
