As South Africa acknowledges 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Afriforum says the extent of rapes committed by serial rapists in the country is worse than what is actually being reported.
According to a new report by AfriForum researchers the number of victims claimed by one serial rapist, who in some cases also include murder, range from two to 58.
The report also shows that an average of 116 rapes are reported to the police each day.
Speaking to Radio Islam, AfriForum’s Barend Uys says the number of rapes in South Africa is deeply disturbing.
“One cannot really find the correct words to describe this crisis. If you look at the information contained in the report, sixty-six thousand incidents reported. When you look at child rape in the 2018/2019 report, eighteen thousand five hundred reported rape cases is just shocking.”
Uys says it is very difficult to establish the root causes and motives behind the high rape numbers.
“We will have to recover to actually regenerate the moral fiber of society because this is a problem. If you look at the scale that is clear in this report, it’s something that communities will have to take responsibility for. We see in South Africa the distortion of custom and the misuse of culture that also in some cases led to rape. This is the kind of thing we need to take responsibility for.”
Uys says the response from government to deal with the exacerbated number of rape cases in the country is lacking adding there is no good support for rape victims including low conviction rates for rapists.
