President Cyril Ramaphosa says the 2019 General Elections in South Africa confirms that freedom does indeed reign in the country.
Ramaphosa was speaking during the official announcement of the provincial and national elections at the Tshwane Results Operation Centre on Saturday night.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) declared South Africa’s 6th democratic general elections as free and fair.
Ramaphosa says twenty five ago, millions of people exercised their democratic right to vote for the very first time – and in doing so set South Africa firmly on a path of freedom and progress.
“Their actions represented the fulfilment of a solemn pledge made decades before in the Freedom Charter, which said that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people.”
He says the will of the people must now be respected.
“Our people have spoken; they’ve done so clearly and emphatically. They voted for a united South Africa, in which all may realise their potential. They’ve voted for a more equal society, free from poverty, hunger and want. They’ve voted for a country that they would like to see at peace with itself and continent.”
Ramaphosa also thanked the media saying it continues to play a vital role in South Africa’s democracy and which was so important in ensuring that the South African people were well informed as they went to vote.
