A marketer and social media creator has told Radio Islam that according to reports, the 4th industrial revolution will be the end of traditional radio & that podcasts will take over.

A podcast is a digital audio file on the Internet, which can be downloaded to a computer or mobile device.

The advantage of podcasts is a consumer can listen to the audio recording offline at any time.

Lebo Lion says podcasts appeal to the younger generation who live in areas outside of cities.

She says while radio stations upload podcasts of their shows, there is a remarkable difference and that content created for radio must be different from content created for podcasts.

“You have to do things for the platforms that they are created for. So a radio show won’t sound like a podcast show and a podcast show won’t sound like a radio show. Radio is live, radio has a lot of engagement, where as with podcasting your audience are ‘ghost’s, you don’t seen them and they only interact with you if they want to email you or they want to comment on your podcast on Sound Cloud or wherever.”

She says podcasts always have an objective for those who listen to it.

“So when some listens to a podcast, they want to have felt like they learnt something at the end of the entire experience, where as I feel like if you think about radio, people just want consistent entertainment.”

Lion says while the US is the biggest consumer of podcasts with many using an app called Anchor FM to listen to podcasts,  in South Africa people use Sound Cloud or iono FM.
