The founder of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia says a 43-year-old man who attacked a pregnant woman wearing a headscarf in a café in a town near Sydney, New South Wales was specifically targeting her because she was carrying a Muslim child.
The 31-year-old woman, who was 38 weeks’ pregnant, was sitting at a table, eating and chatting with friends.
CCTV footage of the incident shows a man slowly approaching the victim, leaning over the table before punching her in the head multiple times before she fell to the ground where it’s alleged the man stomped on her head.
Fellow customers eventually restrained the man, who was then arrested by the police.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Islamic Friendship’s Keysar Trad says the man spewed Islamophobic comments at the woman before attacking her.
“He picked the pregnant woman out of the three to attack even though she herself has not said why he singled her out. He gave the impression that she may be giving birth to another Muslim would be terrorist.”
Trad says while leaders of the country speak out such heinous and prejudicial crimes, their messages are ambiguous.
“One day there are with you, the next day they are against you or they send some subtle messages that are not necessarily supportive.”
Police says the 43-year-old man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and affray.
