Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) says Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s threats against the police is childish and akin to a child throwing his “toys out of the cot”

Popcru slammed the firebrand leader for telling a crowd in the Free State at the weekend, that if the police were looking for a fight, they should say so.

Malema was speaking at a rally in Mohokare where he made the remarks

“We will treat them the same way we treated them in the 80s. We will not only fight at their picket lines, we will also go to their homes and fight them in their own houses with their own families. We are not scared of the police.”

Popcru’s Richard Mambolo says the remarks by Malema is highly irresponsible and puts the lives of police and their families in danger.

He accused Malema of indirectly calling for lawlessness.

“We think that it’s quite childish really for a person who is a member of parliament and who supposed to know that they are the ones as MP’s who legislate around how police operate. It’s really disappointing really.”

Mamabolo says Malema’s threats against the police must be seen in serious light.

“We’ve been losing a lot of police officers in the recent past, seventy two to be precise. I think this can only add to the kind of situation we find ourselves in. What we expect from people who claim to call themselves leaders would be to work towards uniting people with police in the community.”

Meanwhile, police minister Bheki Cele says Malema’s comments were “reckless, irresponsible and dangerous statements”

Cele has called on police officers to protect themselves saying he is confident that if possible were required to, they would be able to defend themselves should they come under attack.
