Political analyst Dr Dale McKinley says while President Cyril Ramaphosa’s performance as a leader in 2020 has been satisfactory, he is part of party that is incompetent.
Dr McKinley and another political analyst Dr Ralph Mathekga were speaking to Radio Islam on Monday about governments rating and performance during 2020.
The year will go down as possibly one of the worst and where the world changed irrevocably.
While Covid-19 cut a swathe through countries rich and small, killing the poor and the rich, the leaders of some of the countries stepped up to the plate and managed to curtail the devastation caused by the virus.
Others, like US president Donald Trump, used it as a political weapon to remain in power.
Dr McKinley says he does not think that Ramaphosa is the worst leader South Africa could have had, but he says the President could have done better.
“He’s sitting on top of a party and a government that is fundamentally incompetent. In many ways it has mismanaged the crisis on many fronts. Ramaphosa has I think ducked and dived quite a bit in terms of a very clear picture of particular on the social and economic front of the fallout of the virus and the pandemic as opposed to simply just to help as well as the corruption issue.”
Dr Mathekga echoed Dr McKinley comments saying Ramaphosa’s performance was mediocre.
“The president has been trying by all means to manage his own personal touch to this. If you look at that personal touch, it looks convincing, confident, comes out addresses the nation, talks about the use of the mask. But the closer you look, you end up with the ANC. He’s got the minister that he has and you still have this corruption with the PPE’s going on. So at the end of the day, it’s just a typical South African story, a potential never taken on another level and you end up with a mediocre performance.”
Independent Media has compiled a performance report on government to help South Africans hold those they voted into power accountable for the promises they made to change their lives for the better.
