Pikitup says refuse during the festive season will be collected on all public holidays except on the 25th of December (Christmas Day).

Residents from Lenasia and surrounds contacted Radio Islam on Monday enquiring whether refuse would be collected as they prepare to travel to their holiday destinations.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Pikitup’s Muzi Mkhwanazi has assured residents that they will be working during the festive period.

“There will be waste collection during this period with the exception of the 25th which is a Friday, Christmas Day, there wont be collection on that particular day. But with respect to all the other holidays during the festive season there will be waste collection.”

Mkhwanazi has also urged residents not give any “Christmas Boxes” to Pikitup employees who are doing refuse collection adding that people should report any such activity to officials of Pikitup.

“To safeguard residents, there are people that are pretending and posting themselves as Pikitup employees requesting for gifts for their own nefarious reasons. So we are trying to protect residents in this regard. In some instances there were criminal activities that were perpetrated by such people so we vehemently discourage such practices.”

Mkhwanazi has urged residents not to illegally dump their waste in areas not designated for dumping but rather use facilities that have been provided by the City of Johannesburg.
