As part of Pharmacy month the South African Pharmacy Council, has called on South African to use medicines wisely in line with the 2018 theme of “Towards Quality Care Together – Use medicines wisely”.
Throughout September pharmacists and other pharmacy professionals across the country will be embarking on an awareness drive around the safe use and storage of medicines.
A recent South African Demographic and Health Survey revealed concerning statistics in relation to the abuse of over-the-counter codeine-containing medicines.
According to the results, two-percent (2%) of those surveyed indicated that they consumed codeine-containing medicines “for the experience or feeling rather than the medicinal effect”.
Speaking to Radio Islam, the Pharmacy Council Vincent Tlala says Abuse of over-the-counter and prescription medication is a cause of various health problems, addiction and disruption of the social lives of the young and old.
“Our appeal to the public is do not use medicines if they are not intended for treating the conditions that are affected.”
Tlala says people should medicines should only be taken when required unless the patient is on chronic medication.
