The National Council of SPCA’s (NSPCA) says they are totally against the plans to ship 60-thousand sheep from the Eastern Cape to the Middle East.
The Al Shuwaikh vessel belonging to Al Mawashi, a Kuwaiti importer that has registered a company in South Africa, arrived at East London harbour last week, tasked with transporting the sheep on a voyage that the NSPCA charged was a “brutal practice”.
AL Mawashi has denied the allegation, saying it operated according to accepted international standards.
Speaking to Radio Islam, the NSPCA’s Grace de Lange says they are totally opposed to the exporting of the sheep.
“We’ve been working closely with Animals Australia, we have documented footage of how the animals suffer, the morality rate, the lack of ventilation onboard and basically animals just boiling alive.”
De Lange says while the South African government has assured the NSPCA that they have not approved the export of the animals, the NSPCA is inquiring how the vessel docked at the harbor without the legal documentation being signed off.
