An Aliah university Professor in India has told Radio Islam, archaeological excavations have revealed there may have been remains of other masaajid instead of a temple below the 16th-century Babri masjid in India.

The demolition of the Babri masjid, which was constructed under the rule of the first Mughal Emperor Babar, triggered religious riots in parts of India that continued for months.

More than 1,000 people were killed, in the worst religious riots since India’s independence in 1947.

Professor Mohamed Reyaz says while many Hindu’s claim there is evidence of a temple under the Babri Masjid, most historians agree that this is not true.

However he says there are reports of masaajid below the archaeological site.

“The Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI’s) led an excavation. That’s the only report which claims that there are remains of the mosque. These two historians who came out in public in 2010, they wrote an article in one of the most reputable social sciences journal in the country ‘Economics and Political Weekly’ and they gave an interview yesterday to Huffington Post where they reiterated those claims.”

Reyaz says the demolition of the Babri Masjid is not just an attack on Muslims, but an attack on the Indian constitution and democracy.
