The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the impasse in the selection of Joburg’s new mayor should have been referred for a legal opinion.

Johannesburg residents are still without a mayor after the much-anticipated council meeting, which was scheduled to elect a new mayor yesterday.

The meeting has now been postponed to 4 or 5 December after political parties disagreed on voting procedures.

The three biggest political parties in council, the African National Congress (ANC), DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), all put forward their respective candidates for the mayoral position, which was left vacant by Herman Mashaba, who left his position yesterday after resigning from the post and the DA last month.

Speaking to Radio Islam, DA Gauteng leader John Moodey says there must be a consensus between the council and the speaker for a decision to be reached in an election.

“There was a disagreement as far as what 50% plus one would entail. So that is where the points of contention was and the prudent thing to have done as was agreed upon by all parties is this matter be referred for a legal opinion so that the speaker and council knows exactly what a quorum should be when they go into an election.”

The DA has denied that it orchestrated the postponement to buy time.
