A senior researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) says a new mobile app has been developed that will bridge communication barriers between health-care providers and patients.

The AwezaMed COVID-19 app was developed by the CSIR in collaboration with Aweza and comes at a time when innovative ideas are required to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Dr Laurette Marais says the app will go a long way to create effective communication between health-care providers and patients.

“Many patients do not speak English and doctors and nurses are typically trained in English. So if there’s a communication barrier, this application allows the doctor or nurse to speak to the application in English some question to the patient and this is then spoken to the patient in his or her own language.”

Marais says AwezaMed COVID-19 is an Android application.

“Any Android device could use the application and it’s also free, it’s available freely. But it’s definitely geared towards doctors and nurses being the primary users using it communicate with patients.”

Marais says the app is available for download on the Google PlayStore.
