Esteemed Islamic scholar Mufti Yusuf Moosagie says there must be a balance between hope and fear in Allah.
Mufti Moosagie was reflecting on a dua that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would make after salaah seeking protection from the punishment of the grave, Jahannam, tests and tribulations of life and death including the fitnah’s of dajjal.
Mufti Moosagie also shared the four types of ibadat that Muslims are urged to implement in their lives including the ibadat of the tongue, heart, limbs and body or wealth.
Mufti Moosagie says the ibadat of the heart, which entails having hope in the mercy of Allah and fearing the warnings, and punishment of Allah is something that people have lost.
“Sometimes too much fear also may also make a person despondent, ‘nah there’s nothing for me to look forward to.’ On the other hand, too much hope also creates an imbalance that you are only thinking about the mercy, you are taking deen like your hobby and you have a very distorted version of Almighty which is almost like your friend, ‘no he’ll understand.’ So you need to have a balance between hope and fear in Allah.”
Mufti Moosagie says Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made dua for protection against Jahannam daily.
“It was to teach us that we can never be complacent that Jahannam, the realities of it is what we need to reflect on.”
