Esteemed and renowned Zimbabwean Islamic scholar Mufti Ismail Menk says the blessed month of Ramadan is not only a month of abstaining from food and drink, but also a month of being more compassionate and charitable to others.

Mufti Menk was speaking during the Ifthar dinner at the Nizamiye Masjid in Midrand.

The Fountain Education Trust hosts Ifthar dinner on an annual basis with a number of  dignitaries from different religious backgrounds in attendance to foster interfaith unity.

The event this year was also attended by Deputy Minister in the Presidency Hlengiwe Mkhize and Minister of Forestry and Fisheries and Environmental Affairs Barbara Creecy among others.

Mufti Menk says the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are very clear when he said: “You want to know who is the best of all the people? He or she who is the most beneficial to the rest of the people.”

“That teaching for me stands out. I grew up in a society that was also multicultural, multiracial, multi-religious in Zimbabwe. I went to Christian schools and I grew up as a Muslim in the midst of people who are Jewish, Hindu and Christian just like the South African story and we find ourselves respecting each other even though we may differ regarding certain matters of faith.”

Mufti Menk says it is important for a true Muslim to foster unity.

“Whatever faith you belong to, whatever race you are from, wherever in the world you come from, we are all from Adam (AS) and Adam was a creature of Allah (SWT), one of our species.”

Mufti Menk says the month of Ramadan is also known as the month of charity and compassion.
