The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic ambassador to South Africa Mohamed Yeslem Beissat says US President Donald Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara is a disgrace.

Beissat was speaking to Radio Islam on Sunday on a range of issues including Morocco’s decision to normalize ties with Israel in a US brokered deal becoming the fourth Arab country since August to normalize ties with Israel.

The other Arab countries include the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Sudan.

The recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara is a big victory for the North African kingdom, with experts saying the move is unlikely to result in widespread support for Morocco’s claim to the territory.

Moroccan forces and the Polisario Front, an armed group demanding independence for Western Sahara, have been fighting over the disputed territory – a vast area bordering Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria that was for decades previously under the Spanish control.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Beissat says the decision by Trump is a shameful, illegal, immoral and a totally outrageous decision.

“We condemn Trump’s proclamation with the strongest words we can use. We think he has violated the international legality, he has violated American values, the American constitution and the American declaration of independence. He has violated the charter of the United Nations, the universal human rights declaration and every single piece of international law and international legality.”

Beissat says Trump has sold Morocco empty promises and will not be able to deliver on his proclamation.

“It’s very shameful that Netanyahu, Mohammed VI and Trump trading the rights and lands of people like they are trading goods. These things were happening in humanity in the last two centuries, two centuries ago when European powers met in Berlin.”

Beissat says Joe Biden has not indicated whether Western Sahara issue will be part of his agenda, but he hopes that the President Elect will address the irrational decision by Trump.
