Esteemed Islamic scholar Ml Sulaimaan Ravat says the Palestinian issue is of great concern.
Ml Ravat was touching on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s statement on Palestine.
On Monday, in his weekly newsletter Ramaphosa said “as lovers of freedom and of justice, South Africa stands with the Palestinian people in their quest for self-determination, but also in their resistance against the deprivation of their human rights & the denial of their dignity.”
Ml Ravat says while there are critics and those who say Ramaphosa’s statement are just words, the President has raised awareness about the Palestinian struggle.
“I think he caught many Palestinian activists and many people who have Palestine at heart by surprise in terms of the extent that he went in highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people and criticizing what is happening to them.”
Ml Ravat says there must be acknowledgment of Ramaphosa’s solidarity with Palestinians in his capacity as President of the country.
“The sentiment I picked up and the impression I got from the different chat groups where these discussions were taking place after the president released his newsletter, was that in the main it was a good one and in the main it was something that we needed to appreciate, all things considered.”
Ml Ravat says the awareness of the plight of the Palestinian struggle must continue.
“The Palestinians in many ways are defending Al Aqsa and Quds on behalf of the entire Ummah, so we owe it to them to become better Muslims so that they get their help and assistance from Allah and we too as well”
Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Essop Pahad told Radio Islam, the state of Israel was built on a lie, has survived on a lie and continues to live on a lie.
